Wake me up, when September ends

NY Drought Monitor

Well, August has come and gone… thankfully….too many 90 degree days for our liking.

September has started on great terms! We’ve have some phenomenal temperatures, reaching down to the upper 30’s, with max temps around the upper 60’s and low 70’s.

We’re just missing one thing…… RAIN

Currently, most of our region is in moderate drought. Not unusual for this time of year, and thankfully the temps are on our side; but we have been under these low water conditions for far too long now.

One positive that i’ve seen from the latest low flows… the Carp are much more concentrated! My usual river runs have multiple flats I can expect to see some lippers munching. Recently, on say in 4 miles of water, Ive had 2 flats where the carp have congregated. Im sure they spread out during early mornings or evenings but you can tell they are feeling much safer in these 2-4’ deep runs and flats.

We have been on the Allegheny targeting Bass, Pike and carp quite a bit lately, making the most of whats given. Even the Gheny is making us drag the drift boat through some riffles!

A few musky hit the bag last week!

As we enter our second week of September, our 14 day outlook for WNY once again shows, MAYBE an inch of rain. If this becomes the case, we’ll see the Southern Tier region change to “Moderate Drought” which isn’t good for anyone!

With these temps though, we do have some Steelhead in the systems. VERY FEW!

They have begun to spread out through the bottom end of the Cattaraugus, on Seneca land. If you have your license, please be aware of the new regulations and zones you can fish. As always, please respect the land and waters! Carry in, carry out!

Alan finding the back crevice!

We are getting excited about the fall season kicking off. Down here in Springville, we have MANY trees that have began turning color, with a few Maples in the valley dropping crunchy leaves already!

We have a FEW dates open in both October and November, with more availability in December.

If you’ve fished with us the lasts few years in December, its been lights out! Some of the best fishing has been during this month, as we have had warmer than usual temps and lowere precipitation, creating great conditions for fishing.
